Minutes after Demetrios Angelis killed his longtime wife in their Ottawa apartment on the morning of June 8, 2008, he headed for church like he did every Sunday.

Their marriage had long been on the rocks and, prosecutor Julie Scott told a jury on Wednesday, the accused deliberately killed her after a violent fight on the living room floor and not long after she cried for someone to call the police.

In her opening address, the prosecutor said the trial will hear evidence that Angelis, then 42, had complained that he had to do most of the domestic duties and that his 38-year-old wife was an unfit mother. The jury also heard that his wife, Lien Angelis, had been having an affair with another man for 15 years.

Neighbour David Kenny, the first Crown witness called, testified that as he played video games in his bachelor apartment at around 7:30 on a Sunday morning he heard what sounded like a muffled argument and that he thought he heard a man’s voice loudly exclaim “bitch”.

“It was out of the ordinary,” Kenny said.

Under cross-examination by Oliver Abergel, Kenny said he did not leave his apartment to go investigate.

Angelis is charged with second-degree murder. The trial resumes Thursday at the Elgin Street courthouse.
